ELEPHANT EXPERIENCES – KNYSNA

Meet the herd at the Knysna Elephant Park. Established in 1994, the Knysna Elephant Park holds the distinction of being the first facility in South Africa dedicated to sheltering and nurturing orphaned African elephants. With a rich history spanning over two decades, the park has provided a safe haven for more than forty elephants, including those relocated from other areas, orphaned calves, and elephants rescued from culls. Depending on their unique personalities, social bonds, and welfare requirements, some elephants have integrated into the resident herd, while others have found homes in reserves and facilities across the Western and Eastern Cape.

At present, the park boasts the country’s largest domesticated matriarchal herd, comprising five magnificent elephants. The approach to management offers visitors an intimate and responsible experience with these incredible creatures while respecting the elephants’ autonomy. Through educational and respectful interactions, guests can witness the awe-inspiring presence of the elephants, while allowing them the freedom to choose their movements, diet, and social interactions. Our environment lacks confining fences, enhancing the close encounter and promoting the display of natural behaviors by the elephants.

SA Residents will be required to show their valid SA ID or Driver’s License on arrival.

 

PROGRAMS

ELEPHANT INTERACTION – MEET THE HERD

Times: Every half an hour (30 minutes) between 09h00 and 15h00. The last tour departs at 15h30.
Duration: 1 hour

An opportunity of a lifetime, as the guides take you up close and personal with these gentle giants. Following a short informative video, guests are transported to the field, where they have the chance to feed and walk among the free-roaming herd of African Elephants. Should you wish to feed the elephants, ‘elephant snack buckets’ are available to purchase at reception. During the “Meet our Herd’ daily tours, the elephants are not required to walk with guests but rather, guests are able to walk among the elephants in their own environment where they roam and move about at their own will. Weather permitting.

Children of all ages are welcome (under adult supervision) for the Elephant Interactions.

Experience an incredibly scenic encounter, meandering through the Park at elephant pace with panoramic views of the Outeniqua mountains and Knysna forest. Join the guides who will relate informative ‘elephant tales’ while you follow in the footsteps of these remarkable animals. Weather permitting.

• Walking with the elephants (Reasonable Fitness Required )
• Educational experience learning about the elephants and the centre’s programs.
