HOT AIR BALLOON FLIGHT – HOEDSPRUIT

Discover one of the most unforgettable adventures in South Africa with a scenic sunrise hot air balloon flight in Hoedspruit. Offered daily (weather permitting), this experience takes you above the Lowveld section of the Blyde River, just 15 km west of Hoedspruit, at the base of the Northern Drakensberg Escarpment.

The pilots provide interesting insights into the landscape, wildlife, and ballooning process, making this more than just a ride, it’s a journey through the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere. Expect a peaceful, slow drift above the treetops with plenty of photo opportunities.

Why Sunrise Only? Hot air balloons require stable, cool air to fly safely. Sunrise provides the calmest and safest flying conditions before the day heats up and thermal winds develop.

Duration: Approx 1 hour flight. We advise passengers to set aside approximately 3 to 4 hours for the morning’s activity (check-in, flight, return transfer to launch site, and if taking the optional breakfast).
Inclusions: 1-hour hot air balloon flight, sparkling wine, tea and coffee served while balloons are being prepared. Breakfast option also available.
Exclusions: Due to seasonal weather challenges, flights will not be conducted between 18 Dec 2025 and 2 Jan 2026. Pregnant women may not participate.

Transport: Guests must self-drive to the launch site (address provided on confirmation), if you need a transfer please note that it is an additonal cost. Please let us know where you are staying when sending your booking request.
What to Wear: Comfortable layered clothing (early mornings are cool, but it warms up quickly), comfortable closed walking shoes. Mornings can be cold year-round so bring a jacket or jersey. In winter (May–August), beanies, scarves, and gloves are strongly recommended.
Things to Bring: Camera and binoculars to capture every incredible moment from above.

Important Information

• Please note pregnant passengers may not participate in the hot air ballooning (for safety precautions).
• Minimum age: 7 years old and 1.2metres tall
• Fitness: Participants must be nimble enough to climb in and out of the 1200mm high basket without assistance. And be able to jump unassisted from a height of 60cm. And stand for the duration of the flight; approx. one hour unless stated otherwise.
• Please keep in mind that hot air ballooning is 100% weather dependent. Should we have to cancel the flight due to unsafe flying conditions (such as strong wind or rain), then we will not be held liable for any accommodation reservations made in anticipation of the hot air balloon flight.
• Should you miss the flight, the flight tickets will be forfeited as per the Terms and Conditions.
• Please note that hot air balloon flights are weather dependent.
• To increase your chances of flying, we recommend booking your flight as early as possible during your stay, allowing time for a back-up day in case of poor weather.

Flight Confirmation & Weather Conditions:
Flights may be cancelled if wind or rain is expected by the operator. We do our best to confirm or cancel the flight by 4:00 PM the day before. However, weather can change unexpectedly overnight. In such cases, we may need to contact your lodge or you directly early in the morning to prevent unnecessary travel to the launch site.

Cancellation Terms:
If the flight is cancelled by the operator due to bad weather, you may choose one of the following options:

• Reschedule to another day (subject to availability and pilot/operator approval)
• Receive a voucher to the value paid that is valid for 6 months, which can be used for a future balloon flight or any other Tours & Tickets SA activity
• Request a refund, which will be processed less a 20% admin fee (please allow up to 7 days for processing)

If the flight is not cancelled, but you choose to cancel, change your mind, or do not show up, a 100% cancellation fee applies.

What time does the hot air balloon flight start?

Flights take place early in the morning at sunrise, when the air is calm and cool. We’ll confirm your exact meeting time after you book.

How long is the full experience?

The flight itself lasts about 1 hour. Including the safety briefing, balloon set-up, and landing, the total experience takes around 3 to 4 hours.

Is transport included?

No, transport is not included. Guests need to make their own way to the meeting point, which will be provided after booking.

What is the minimum age and height for a hot air balloon flight?

The minimum age is 7 years old, and passengers must be at least 1.2 metres tall (approximately 4 feet).

What happens if my flight is cancelled due to bad weather?

If the operator cancels your flight, you can choose to either: 1) Reschedule to another available day 2) Receive a voucher (valid for 6 months, redeemable for any Tours & Tickets SA activity) 3) Request a refund (processed minus a 20% admin fee)

When will my flight be confirmed or cancelled?

We aim to confirm or cancel flights by 4:00 PM the day before. However, weather can change overnight. If conditions are unsuitable in the morning, we will contact your lodge or you directly to avoid unnecessary travel.

Are there any physical requirements for passengers?

Yes — you must be able to stand unassisted for the duration of the flight and climb in and out of the basket without help. Pregnant persons are not permitted to fly.

What is the cancellation policy if I choose not to fly?

If the flight is not cancelled by the operator but you cancel, change your mind, or do not show up, a 100% cancellation fee applies.
