LION EXPERIENCE – BUFFELSDRIFT

Get up close with the kings and queens of the Karoo on a Lion Feeding Experience at Buffelsdrift near Oudtshoorn. This unforgettable encounter takes place at a spacious 5-hectare enclosure, home to three magnificent lions — Shumba, Tonga, and Safia — who live out their days in a safe, enriched environment.

Born in captivity and unable to be released into the wild, the siblings were relocated to Buffelsdrift in 2017 from a smaller reserve. Their new home was designed with their well-being in mind, offering them space, stimulation, and peace. This is a hands-off experience that respects their wild instincts — no touching, just observation and education.

Climb aboard an open game vehicle and head to the raised viewing deck overlooking the enclosure. From this elevated platform, you’ll witness a live feeding session led by one of our experienced guides. Expect guttural roars, raw meat, and the unmistakable presence of the kings & queens of the Karoo! Along the way, you’ll learn about lion behaviour, conservation efforts, and the unique personalities of each lion — from Tonga’s bold confidence to Safia’s gentle curiosity and Shumba’s dominant energy.

Important: Lions are wild animals and will not be touched or handled under any circumstances. Max 20 guests per session — pre-booking is essential.
