The Kruger and Lowveld areas of Mpumalanga are a South African popular tourist destination. The region starts in the south from the Mozambiquan border by Komatipoort, stretching across to Mbombela. Then reaching north towards the Blyde River Canyon and across East to the Kruger National Park.
The Lowveld area is described as restricted to broad valleys below 1000m below sea level. The Lowveld and southern Kruger area has a subtropical climate with humidity that can be compared to Durban’s.
The Kruger Lowveld region is home to several small towns that have unique offerings to travellers. Hazyview is known as the adventure hub of the Lowveld, and we can see why! With activities that range from mild to wild, and the perfect base to visit the Kruger National Park only 10 minutes away. Graskop and Sabie are the gateways to the Panorama Route, where you can explore the forests, and Blyde River Canyon, or take a trip out to the historical town of Pilgrim’s Rest. White River and Mbombela are Mpumalanga’s urban capitals close to the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. Don’t forget to visit the secret gem of Kaapsehoop where the wild horses are found, and good food and vibes at the Bohemian Groove Cafe.
The Lowveld is a low-lying subtropical climate where broad-leafed and thorn trees coexist in open woodlands, and with wide rivers such as the Sabie River. The area is rich with wildlife and is a birder’s paradise! From the cheeky vervet monkeys found almost everywhere, to the elusive Narina trogon. Most of the southern Kruger National Park falls into this biome and spotting the big 5 is almost a guarantee. Read more facts about the Kruger National Park here.
Blyde River Canyon
The world-famous Blyde River Canyon is the largest ‘green canyon’ in the world. With views from God’s Window over the Lowveld that on a clear day can see up to the Kruger, towering waterfalls, and incredible hiking spots, this should be on everyone’s bucket list!
