Getting Ready for Your Journey

Our day started bright and early, arriving at the Cape Town V&A Waterfront departure platform by 7:00 AM. After grabbing freshly brewed coffee from the on-site coffee vendor and validating our R50 parking ticket (a quick and easy process), we were ready for departure.

Sabine’s Top Tip #1: Prepay for parking when booking your tickets—it saves time, and you’ll only need to validate it at check-in.

Boarding & Departure

As the impressive 14 cabin long train pulled into the station, excitement and steam filled the air. There were many photo opportunities before boarding, and we made sure to capture the moment.

By 7:45 AM, we were comfortably seated in our Lounge Car, enjoying the vintage décor and spacious seating. At exactly 8:00 AM, the whistle blew, the train rumbled to life, and we set off on our adventure.

Sabine’s Top Tip #2: The journey can be long, so it’s a good idea to bring a book or board games to pass the time. If you’d prefer a shorter trip on the train, you can board at Van Der Stel Station in Somerset West.

The Scenic Journey to Elgin

Steam Train en-route to Elgin Market

The journey to Elgin is nothing short of spectacular. As the train weaved through rolling vineyards, farmlands, and lush forests, it felt like stepping back in time. The highlight of the ride was crossing Sir Lowry’s Pass as the train chugged up hills, through tunnels, and on cliffs. From this breathtaking vantage point, you are treated to views of Somerset West, Strand, Gordon’s Bay, and False Bay.

With the warm breeze drifting through the windows, the experience was even more magic. Our friendly coach attendant shared fascinating insights about the train’s history and the local areas throughout the trip.

Sabine’s Top Tip #3: Bring a light jacket—open windows mean a refreshing breeze, but it can get chilly in certain areas.

Onboard Experience

Passengers can purchase light meals, snacks, and drinks on board, with a variety of affordable options available. Whether you’re in the mood for a quick bite or a warm beverage, there’s something to enjoy while sitting back and watching the world pass by.

The train is cashless, so be sure to bring a debit or credit card for any purchases.

Sabine’s Top Tip #4: Don’t forget your camera or a portable power bank for your phone!

Sabine’s Top Tip #5: This train ride is a perfect date idea for couples—purchase a bottle of bubbly from the bar car and enjoy a toast (or two)!

Exploring the Elgin Railway Market

After 4 hours of scenic travel from Cape Town, we arrived at the Elgin Railway Market! This local market in the mountains and farmlands in Elgin is housed in a restored apple warehouse that was originally built by Italian POW’s in the 1940’s.

The train’s arrival brings about a buzzing atmosphere as it arrives with everyone in the market waving and coming outside! Spend around 2 hours at the market where you can enjoy a meal, shop, relax with live music – perfect spot for families, couples, and friends to stretch their legs and feel festive.

With numerous food stalls, it was hard to choose, but the pizza stall stood out as a must-try. From artisanal baked goods to local delicacies, there was something for everyone. The market also featured handmade crafts, locally sourced products, and branded merchandise—perfect for picking up unique souvenirs.

Sabine’s Top Tip #6: Feeling hungry? Head straight for the pizza stall—it’s a crowd favourite. P.S. Remember to look up and marvel at the unique aeroplane propellers that have been repurposed as fans in the market.

Homeward Bound

After 2 hours meandering through the market, sipping on some local beer and gin, we headed back to the train to board for the journey home. With our hearts full and stomachs even fuller, many took a short nap or spent the journey back taking photos of the sunset and surrounding areas which we passed in the morning.

Our steam train journey to Elgin and back to Cape Town was an unforgettable experience that combined the charm of vintage travel with stunning landscapes and a fantastic market stop. Whether you’re a railway enthusiast, a nature lover, or just looking for a unique day trip, this adventure is a must-do.
