Mpumalanga has the most waterfalls compared to any other province in South Africa. The province is also home to the Kruger National Park and the Blyde River Canyon, making it a popular tourist destination. The majority of these waterfalls are found along the Panorama Route near the towns of Sabie and Graskop. Here are five waterfalls you need to include in your next visit:
Lone Creek Falls
Located 10 minutes from Sabie, this waterfall is a National Monument for its natural beauty. Explore the 68m waterfall on a variety of walkways through the forest to view it from different angles. Lone Creek Falls is a perfect stop during your visit as they also have picnic facilities nearby.
Lisbon Falls
Lisbon Falls just outside of Graskop on the popular route to Three Rondawels, God’s Window, and Bourkes Luck Potholes. These falls are one of the highest in Mpumalanga at an impressive 94m. View the falls from the viewing platform or go on a hike to the bottom.
Berlin Falls
These falls plummet 80m down the cliff face into the basin below. Said to look like a giant candle with the narrow top part shaping the wick. The waterfall’s name derives from the European city as named by the miners in the 1800s gold rush to the area.
Mac Mac Falls
You will find the Mac Mac Falls located upstream from the popular picnic site of Mac Mac Pools. Originally a single stream, the miners diverted the river to work a nearby gold reef. These twin waterfalls plunge 65m over the cliff face into the forest and gorge below.
Bridal Veil Falls
Resembling a veil from a bride’s wedding outfit, these falls are a must-visit outside of Sabie. Although the waterfall measures 70m, the water does not plunge down and rather sprays gently down onto the rocks below. Exploring the falls is easy but slippery along the walkways through the forest.
Other waterfalls that deserve a mention are the Graskop Falls (take the Gorge Lift into the forest below), Maria Shires Falls, Horseshoe Falls, and Forest Falls.
