Tips for a WOW Safari Experience

The Kruger National Park is known for its amazing wildlife and safari experiences, and it is important to know how to make your safari as memorable as possible!  Here are a few top tips for all visitors, to help your safari go smoothly and to enjoy it to the fullest.

Plan & Prepare Your Safari in Advance!

What season is the best time to visit the Kruger Park? What time of day gives the best viewings? These are all points that need to be considered, for you to get the most from your safari.

The best season to visit the Kruger Park is during the winter months (May-August), as the weather is comfortable & dry. Due to the dry conditions, the bush is not as thick, allowing for improved chances of spotting wildlife.

Early mornings and late afternoons boast the best viewing opportunities. During morning safaris, animals are likely to be spotted around watering holes, before moving off into the bush for the day. In the late afternoons, predators awaken to prepare for their nightly hunts.

Entry Fees to the Kruger

The Kruger Park requires all visitors to pay an entry fee upon arrival. The Park is a cashless facility, so be sure to bring your credit/debit cards to pay on arrival. Wildcards are also accepted at the Kruger Park’s gates, but remember to bring your ID or Passport! Read through our Safari Essentials for vital information about the Kruger Park’s entry fees.

Don’t Skip the Snacks!

Pack yourself a picnic with snacks for the safari! Safaris can be lengthy, and while rest stops are made, you could get peckish along the way. Alternatively, you can purchase meals at a restaurant inside the Kruger’s rest camps.

Khaki Fever

Dress in neutral colours, such as khaki or dark green. This is designed to ensure that you blend in during your safari and that animals will not be affected by bright colours. Remember to layer, as early mornings & late afternoons can be quite chilly. Always apply sunscreen & wear a hat, as the African sun can be quite harsh on your skin.

What’s that over there?

Spotting wildlife in the Kruger is an art form, and we highly recommend bringing binoculars & a camera – that way you will not miss out on those once-in-a-lifetime sightings! A smartphone with a good quality camera & a portable charger is also necessary to capture memories along the way.

Go ‘Off the Grid’

Mobile reception is quite limited inside the Kruger Park. This allows visitors to disconnect from the hustle & bustle of everyday life, and immerse themselves in nature and the beauty of the Kruger National Park. Take a breath and relax as you explore the Bush!

Respect the Wildlife

The Kruger Park is home to thousands of indigenous wildlife and plant species, and conservation is a big focus inside the Park. Maintain a respectful distance from wildlife, and keep noise levels low. Be sure to follow the rules & regulations of the Kruger Park, as set out by SANParks.
